FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve put together a helpful FAQ page about Minnesota-based Metro Mole Control and our professional Mole, Gopher and Vole removal services.  Here you will find some of the more common service-related questions.  As always, please feel free to contact us regarding any clarification or questions that may not be addressed on this page.

What kind of properties do you serve?

Metro Mole Control services all types of properties including residential homeowners, HOA’s, commercial businesses, local government, and non-profits.  We proudly serve the entire Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan area and suburbs.  We can also refer you to a qualified service provider should you live outside of our normal service area.

Are you licensed and insured?

We are permitted by the State of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Agriculture.  We are fully insured for providing both residential and commercial services.

How do I identify my specific nuisance wildlife management problem?

Please refer to the Mole, Gopher, and Vole sections of our website for detailed descriptions and photos.  Metro Mole Control will work with you to identify your specific problem during our initial no charge consultation.

– If you have a mole(s), you may see hills of dirt shaped like a volcano and/or surface tunnels that look like veins on the back of your hand.  These surface tunnels are soft spots in your lawn.  In some cases, you will see the grass turning brown following the tunnel system.  Tunnels often follow along a house foundation, driveway, lawn border or another solid object.  Mole sign will always include surface tunnels but hills of dirt are not always visible.  When visible, molehills are usually 6 to 10 inches in diameter.
– If you have a gopher(s), you will see many large dirt mounds that are crescent-shaped (like a “C”).  You will not see the same surface tunnels created by moles. Gopher Mounds can be up to 12 inches in diameter.
– If you have voles, you may see round, open surface holes with grass blades or other vegetation cropped back around the perimeter of the hole.  You may see ornamental plant and/or shrub damage with above ground lawn runways (about the width of a quarter) and/or lawn damage.  Vole sign may include holes, runways, or often both but never hills or mounds.

Will my problem go away without any removal efforts?

It is extremely unlikely that your problem will disappear without removal efforts.  It is imperative to address the situation when you see the problem developing.  The longer the problem exists, the more difficult it is to control it.  Animals become established, tunnel networks continue to grow larger increasing the likelihood that even if vacated, they will attract new animals down the road.

Are your services harmful to children, pets, or the environment?

Metro Mole Control prides itself on the fact that we never use unsecured poisons in our operations.  In the case of moles, poisons rarely work.  Moles hunt by sound and eat live earthworms and insects.  Moles rarely touch something that isn’t living and breathing.  Poisons sometimes work for other nuisance animals, but the consequences to pets and untargeted animals may be concerning.  In this video, Dr. Karen Becker of Healthy Pets discusses how pets can be inadvertently poisoned by rodent bait – how it happens, what to look for, and what you must-do if you suspect your dog or cat has ingested poisoned bait.

How are your services performed?

Metro Mole Control will be straightforward regarding your specific situation and the appropriate solution.  Once service terms have been agreed upon, we will place SAFE, humane underground traps at strategic locations.  These trap locations are well marked with small flags or paint.  No unsightly trap covers or buckets are left on your property.  No part of the trap is exposed above the ground so you may continue your regular activities without interruption.  In rare instances where we use above-ground traps, we will place protective covers over the traps.  Our services and techniques are targeted at your nuisance animals and do not interfere with family activities or other non-targeted animals.

Traps are “blitz” set, which means that we place enough traps out at one time to eradicate nuisance animals in the shortest time possible.  We ask that you do not destroy any evidence of activity on your property such as surface tunnels or dirt mounds.  We can use this activity to determine optimal trap locations.  After trap placement, we ask that you try to limit any physical activity and mowing within a few feet of the marked traps.  Metro Mole Control will return to your property on a regular basis to inspect and if necessary, reposition traps.  After each visit, we provide an email, text or verbal inspection summary.  At the end of the service term, we will provide a final assessment of successful removal and conclude services.

Do I need to be present when you service my property?

No, you do not need to be home or at your place of business.  We just need to gain access to the service area.  Any special information such as gate codes, dogs in the yard, etc., can be provided to us at the time we schedule your service.
